Sodium tartrate
Other names: Sodium tartrate, E 335, Monosodium tartrate
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Sodium tartrate, also known as sodium tartrate or monosodium tartrate, is a chemical compound that belongs to the so-called tartrates. In the form of a food additive, it is coded as E335. It is a white, odourless, crystalline powder that is soluble in water and has a sweet and sour taste.
Sodium tartrate is widely used in the food industry, where it is added to many products due to its regulatory and stabilising properties. It is often found, for example, in cheese, bakery products, yoghurt, beverages, ice cream, canned foods and various types of desserts as an acidity regulator. Sodium tartrate prevents pH changes and helps maintain the optimum acidity of foods. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry and in optical and photographic technologies. Although it is a safe substance, high doses can cause side effects such as indigestion. It is therefore important to always follow the recommended amount.
