Sodium Propionate
Other names: Sodium propionate, E 281
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Sodium Propionate or Sodium Propionate, also referred to as E 281, is a food additive that is produced by reacting propionic acid with sodium. It is a white crystalline substance with no odour or taste. Its main function is to act as a preservative to prevent the growth of mould and bacteria in food. Due to this property, it is widely used in the production of foodstuffs, especially those that require a longer shelf life without the need for refrigeration.
Due to its preservative abilities, Sodium Propionate is often present in various types of baked goods and bakery products such as rolls, breads, cakes and others. It is also used in processed cheeses, sausages and other meat products. Other applications include canned vegetables and fruit. Although it is an artificial additive, it is considered safe for human consumption, provided of course that the recommended daily allowance is followed. However, the consumption of products containing Sodium Propionate may cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to this substance.
