Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Sodium Myristate, also known as Tetradecanoic acid, Sodium salt, Tetradecanoic acid, sodium salt, sodium tetradecanoate or sodium myristate, is a substance that is widely used in the cosmetic industry. It is the salt of myristic acid, a saturated fatty acid commonly found in animal and vegetable fats. Sodium Myristate is a white powder that is readily soluble in water and is capable of forming a foam, leading to its widespread use in many personal care products.
In personal care products, Sodium Myristate is used as an emulsifier - a substance that allows two normally immiscible substances such as oil and water to mix, helping to create a creamy consistency in the product. It is thus found, for example, in soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers and other skin care products. Thanks to its emulsifying abilities, it also improves the distribution of other ingredients in the cosmetic product. At the same time, Sodium Myristate acts as a cleanser that helps exfoliate dead skin cells and helps keep skin clean. Along with this, it can also act as an anti-static agent that prevents static electricity, for example, in the hair. Sodium Myristate is therefore an indispensable helper in a wide range of cosmetic and hygiene products.
