Sodium Magnesium Silicate
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, also known as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or Sodium Magnesium Silicate, is a chemical compound that is commonly used in the cosmetics industry and the manufacture of cleaning products. The substance is considered safe but can cause skin or eye irritation with prolonged exposure. If your skin is hypersensitive, you may experience discomfort when using products containing SLS.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is used in many products that we are familiar with in our daily lives. It is mainly found in shampoos, shower gels, toothpastes and soaps, where it acts as a strong foaming agent or emulsifier. It dissolves and removes dirt and grease, thus improving the cleaning effect of the product. Another application is in cleaning products such as dishwasher powders, window, floor or bathroom cleaners. Despite being considered a controversial ingredient in some circles, sodium lauryl sulfate is still widely used in the cosmetic industry and its use is regulated by strict safety standards.
