Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate

Other names: SHMG, Sodium salt n-(hydroxymethyl) glycine, sodium;2-(hydroxymethylamino)acetate

Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)

Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, also known by the names SHMG, Sodium salt n-(hydroxymethyl)glycine or sodium;2-(hydroxymethyl)acetate, is an organic compound used primarily as a preservative and antimicrobial agent in cosmetic and personal care products. This preservative is a derivative of the amino acid gylcine and is known for its excellent ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeast and mold, which is particularly useful in products that have a longer shelf life.

Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate is widely used in products such as shampoos, conditioners, soaps, creams, lotions, makeup products and other skin and hair care products. It is also often found in some products intended for children, including baby shampoos and creams. Due to its preservative properties, SHMG is able to increase the shelf life of products while inhibiting the growth of harmful microorganisms. However, despite its benefits, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate has been controversial in the past due to its potential irritation to the skin and eyes of some individuals, therefore caution is required when using it.
