Sodium Hydroxide
Other names: caustic soda, sodium hydroxide, natron
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Sodium Hydroxide, also known as sodium hydroxide, caustic soda or natron, is a very strong base. It has the chemical formula NaOH and is a white, crystalline substance that is available in many cases as a solid, colorless substance or as a 50% aqueous solution. Sodium hydroxide has strong corrosive properties and exhibits inhibitory effects on bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores.
In industry, sodium hydroxide is used in a myriad of applications. It is one of the most important raw materials in the chemical industry. For example, it is used in the manufacture of soaps, detergents and cleaning agents, textiles, paper and many types of plastics. In the food industry, it is used to control acidity, in the processing of chocolate and cocoa, and in the manufacture of preserves and confectionery. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry, where it is used to neutralise acids and to produce salts. But despite its wide use, great care must be taken when handling sodium hydroxide, as it is highly corrosive and can cause serious health problems.
