Sodium Chloride is the chemical name for the substance commonly known as salt. Salt is one of the most important and oldest primary raw materials sought after by humans. Its other names may be table salt, table salt, Himalayan salt, rock salt, sea salt or sodium chloride. All of these names cover different forms and uses of salt, but they all derive from its basic form, sodium chloride. Its chemical formula is NaCl and it is an ionic compound. Salt essentially forms cubic crystals that are suitable for consumption because of their high mechanical resistance and low reactivity.
Salt, in whatever form, is used in various products and industries. It is an indispensable ingredient in the food industry, where it is used as a flavouring and preservative. It is the table salt that everyone is familiar with. Sea salt, which is rich in minerals and trace elements, is popular in cosmetics. Himalayan pink salt is known for its healing properties and is popular in wellness and spa. Rock salt is also used in industry, for example in winter road gritting. Sodium chloride is also the main raw material for the production of many chemicals, chlorine and sodium hydroxide. Each form of salt therefore has its own specific use and importance for humans.
