Other names: Lichen nivalis, Cetraria nivalis, Allocetraria nivalis
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The snowdrop, also known as Lichen nivalis, Cetraria nivalis or Allocetraria nivalis, is a species of lichen that prefers cold climates and high mountain environments. Far north, it is found in areas where there is a lack of soil for other plants to grow. This species of lichen occurs naturally in the Arctic, Antarctica, Alaska and open tundra habitats, for example. Snowdrop is an evergreen plant. The colour of the thallus (the plant body of the lichen) is usually pale yellow-green or white-green. In winter, it is covered with snow, which provides it with the necessary moisture.
The snowdrop is used extensively in industry. It is a source of the polysaccharide lichenate, which is used as a food additive, for example as a thickener, emulsifier, stabiliser or gel-forming agent. Lichenate is an EU approved additive (E160a). Snowdrop is also a component of various cosmetic products, especially those aimed at skin regeneration and rejuvenation, and is even used in perfumery. Various extracts and essential oils from this lichen are used to make perfumes and fragrances, where they add a unique, fresh yet earthy scent. In addition, in folk medicine of the northern regions, this lichen is also used to treat various respiratory ailments.
