Smilax medicum, also known as Sarsaparilla veracruz or Smilax officinalis, is a species of climbing plant native to tropical regions of Central and South America. This plant is exceptional for its medicinal properties, which have been known since the time of the ancient Mayans and Aztecs. They used it, for example, as a means of aiding digestion, purifying the blood, relieving pain and treating skin problems. Smilax officinalis is also a rich source of phytonutrients, which help strengthen the immune system and protect the body from free radicals.
Nowadays, smilax is mainly used in medicine and pharmacy, where it is used to make a variety of herbal supplements and medicines. The plant is particularly popular for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory effects. Extracts of smilax are also often added to creams and ointments designed to treat skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis or acne, due to its effects on skin regeneration and reducing inflammation. Quite interestingly, it is also used in sodas, where smilax was once used as the basis for the traditional American drink sarsaparilla, which has a taste reminiscent of root beer. The main ingredient in this drink was the extract of smilax, which gave it a specific sweet and spicy taste.
