Silicones
Other names: Cyclohexasiloxane
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Silicones or cyclohexasiloxanes are among the substances found in a wide range of everyday products. Their key properties include excellent stability and durability. They are not toxic, allergenic or carcinogenic and do not accumulate in the body. They are used, for example, as lubricants and insulants in electrical engineering, for the manufacture of cosmetic products, in medicine, but also in the food and construction industries. Silicones are also the main ingredient in hydrophobic coatings that protect surfaces from moisture. Their presence in cosmetics can be detected by the ending "-siloxane" or "-silicone" in the list of ingredients.
The most commonly used products containing silicones are cosmetics and hygiene products. For example, shampoos, conditioners, face and body creams, lipsticks, make-up, hair sprays and deodorants often contain silicones, which give them a smooth and creamy feel, increase their smoothness and shine, help them spread on the skin, improve their durability and water resistance, and also prevent excessive drying of the skin. The aforementioned properties of silicones are also applied in medicine, specifically in the manufacture of various medical devices, fillers and plasters, which are particularly appreciated for their non-toxicity and biocompatibility. Silicones are also used in the food industry, where they are used as antifoaming agents or as part of food packaging. In the construction industry, silicones are used as sealants and insulating materials to increase the resistance of buildings to external influences.
