Silicon
Other names: Silica, Hydrated Silica, Silica
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Silicon is one of the most important elements on our planet. It is a semi-metal that is abundant in the Earth's crust. In nature, it occurs mainly in the form of silica, which is its most common compound. This compound has many forms and names; it may also be known as silica, hydrated silica, or simply silica sand. Silica is characterized by its hardness, resistance to high temperatures and chemically stable structure.
The importance of silicon and its compounds cannot be overstated, as it is used in a wide variety of industries and manufacturing. Perhaps the best known uses are in the manufacture of glass, ceramics and cement. But silicon also plays a major role in the electronics industry, where it is used in the manufacture of semiconductors and solar panels. Its compounds are also used as an ingredient in various cosmetic products, for example as abrasives in toothpastes or as grease absorbers in hair care products. Silica is also often used as a filler in the manufacture of rubbers and plastics, or as a raw material in the production of special types of glass such as borosilicate glass. It is also of great importance in the food industry, for example as an anti-caking additive in foods.
