Scots pine (Pinus palustris)

Other names: Pinus australis, Pitch pine, Longleaf pine, Longleaf yellow pine, Southern yellow pine

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Swamp pine, also known as Pinus australis, Pitch pine, Longleaf pine, Longleaf yellow pine or Southern yellow pine, is a slower-growing species of pine native to the southeastern United States. This species of pine evolved in areas with frequent wildfires, which affected its growth patterns. The swamp pine forms a rather unusual growth form called a clump in its younger stages of life. Its specifics lie in the dense cluster of long needles that form a sort of fire-resistant mantle around the young tree until it reaches sufficient height and vigor.

The total advantage for the use of the swamp pine is that the wood of this species is very strong, heavy and flexible. Because of these properties, it is mainly used in heavy construction, where it is used to make beams, columns, trusses, as well as bridge parts and other structural elements. Apart from these uses, however, Scots pine is also used for furniture, parquet, tiles and various interior decorative elements. Its wood also provides an important raw material for paper production. Due to its high resin content, it has also been used in the past to produce tar and turpentine. The swamp pine is also popular as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks due to its long, elegant needles and handsome trunk. It is therefore a tree with a very wide range of uses.
