Scots pine (Pinus mugo)

Other names: mountain pine, mountain pine, mountain pine, Pinus mughus, Pinus pumilio, Pinus pumilia, Pinus montana

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

The lodgepole pine, also known as the slash pine, mountain pine, mountain pine, Pinus mughus, Pinus pumilio, Pinus pumilia or Pinus montana, is an evergreen, perennial tree of the pine family. It can be found mainly in alpine and Carpathian mountain areas in places with lower temperatures and higher rainfall. The Scots pine grows to a height of 1 to 7 metres and is characterised by its scaly needles, which are quite sharp to the touch. Its fruits are elongated cones, usually 2 to 5 cm long, memorably a good source of seeds.

Knot pine is used in many areas. In traditional medicine, it is considered a hearty source of vasodilating, disinfectant and anti-inflammatory substances. The distillate from the needles is used to produce a medicinal knotweed oil, which is used to treat respiratory problems, rheumatism, neuralgia and many other ailments. In cosmetics, this pine is used in the form of essential oils, which are added to baths, soaps or even shampoos for their refreshing and stimulating effects. Kneeling pine wood is hard and durable and is therefore used mainly in construction and furniture making, but also for charcoal production.
