Other names: Saraca, Ashoka Tree, Ashok, Ashok briksh

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Saraca indica, also known as Saraca indica, Ashoka Tree, Ashok or Ashok briksh, is a tree native to South Asia, where it is considered one of the holiest and most sacred. This tree, which is actually a flowering plant from the berry family, is not only a beauty to the eyes with its bright orange to scarlet flowers, but is also a valuable resource used for its medicinal properties. The age of this tree often ranges from twenty to thirty years and reaches a height of five to fifteen metres.

The uses of Saraca indica are manifold. It is an essential part of many Ayurvedic medicines, where the bark and flowers of the tree are mainly used. The bark is traditionally used to treat fever, dyspepsia, inflammation or even as a tonic. More recently, the tree is also used in the cosmetic industry. Its extracts are often found in skin care products such as creams, serums or masks, where they help to reduce wrinkles, improve skin hydration and increase skin elasticity. It is therefore no wonder that this plant is highly respected and popular in India, both for its appearance and for its medicinal and cosmetic uses.
