Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The Hispanic sage, better known as Chia, is a plant native to Mexico. Its seeds are prized for their health benefits and versatile use in the kitchen. Chia seeds are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, fibre and protein, making them a so-called superfood. Significant health benefits include aiding digestion, reducing fatigue and tiredness, beneficial effects on the skin and much more.
Chia seeds are used in many products, especially as part of a healthy and balanced diet. They have a neutral taste, which makes them suitable for adding to a variety of dishes. They are more commonly found in various types of muesli, porridge, smoothies, salads or as part of baked goods, replacing eggs. Chia seeds can also be boiled to create chia pudding, which is becoming a very popular alternative to classic desserts. More recently, they have also appeared in a range of soft drinks called Chia drinks, where the seeds are dipped in a fruit or herbal syrup. Chia is thus becoming an essential part of a modern healthy diet.
