Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis)

Other names: Redbud, Redbush

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), also known as Cape tea plant or Redbush, is a plant native to South Africa. This shrub of parallel-veined leaves grows mostly in the mountainous environment of the Ceder Mountains. Although rooibos does not fit the traditional definition of tea, it is often referred to as "rooibos tea". In South Africa, rooibos is traditionally used for its medicinal properties for inflammation of the respiratory tract and in the digestive tract.

Rooibos is used in many industries, especially in the food and cosmetics industries. The shrub is harvested, then its leaves and twigs are fermented, giving it its characteristic red colour and sweet taste, and dried. The most common product is tea made from fermented rooibos leaves, which is popular for its unique taste, but also for its health benefits such as its antioxidant content and lack of caffeine. Rooibos is also used to make an espresso-like drink that is a popular alternative to traditional coffee drinks. In the cosmetics industry, rooibos is used in skin creams, shampoos and bath salts due to its anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant content. Rooibos is also used in gastronomy as a spice or as a base for sauces and marinades.
