Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
Other names: Lactoflavin, Food Yellow 15
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is essential for many of our bodily functions. It belongs to the group of B vitamins, which include some of the most important nutrients for our bodies. Riboflavin is involved in many different biochemical reactions, including those that affect cell growth, energy production and the metabolism of fat, protein and carbohydrates. Its other names, such as Lactoflavin and Food Yellow 15, reflect its chemical composition and uses.
Riboflavin is often used in food products as an additive. It is known for its ability as a colouring agent, giving it its other name Food Yellow 15. It is added in foods to improve their appearance and taste, especially if the products contain dairy products, as riboflavin is contained in lactoflavins. However, it is also found in large quantities in meat, eggs, nuts and dark green vegetables. This makes its deficiency in the Western diet relatively rare. Riboflavin is also used in cosmetics, especially in hair and skin care products, due to its antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from damage.
