Reindeerweed (Cladonia rangiferina), also known as Cladina rangiferina or Lichen rangiferinus, is a species of lichen that is abundant in boreal and alpine regions in the northern hemisphere. This lichen is relatively undemanding of growing conditions, mainly surviving on poor, acidic soils. It is a plant that is very resistant to extreme climatic conditions. It can survive even in the freezing temperatures of polar winters. In addition, reindeer herbage is a key ingredient in the diet of reindeer and caribou during the winter, hence its name.
The uses of reindeer mushroom are quite varied. As well as being used as food for animals, it is also used in human consumption. When properly processed, it can be edible and is part of the traditional cuisine of some Arctic peoples. These people dry the lichen and mix it with other ingredients to create nutritious dishes. In addition, reindeer gum is used medicinally for its healing properties. It contains substances that have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. When used externally, it is used to treat various skin problems such as eczema, acne or psoriasis. However, its use is not limited to the food industry and medicine. In the construction industry, it is used as a thermal and acoustic insulator as it is resistant to moisture and mould. In floristry, it is used as a filler for bouquets and wreaths.
