Quaternium-83

Quaternium-83, also known by the names imidazolium compounds, 4,5-dihydro-2-(hydrogenated nortallow alkyl)-1-[2-(hydrogenated tallow amido)ethyl]-1-methyl or Me sulfates, belongs to the group of quaternary ammonium salts. This name may be confusing, but the important point is that these substances are commonly used in cosmetic formulations. Quaternium-83 and similar compounds are popular for their antistatic and preservative effects.

Specifically, Quaternium-83 is predominantly used in hair cosmetic products. Its antistatic properties help to reduce "flyaways" which are a common problem with fine and dry hair. The substance also helps to improve the overall appearance and shine of the hair. Its preservative properties in turn extend the shelf life of the products. Apart from hair cosmetics, it can also be found in some skin or body care products.
