Quaternium-15, also known by a number of other names such as Hexamethylenetetramine chloroallyl chloride, Azonium adamantane chloride, N-(3-chloroallyl)hexaminium chloride, Chloroallyl methenamine chloride, 1-(3-chloroallyl)-3,5,7-triaza-l-azoniaadamantane chloride, Methenamine-3-chloroallyl chloride or Hexamethylenetetramine, is a chemical substance that is used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries due to its preservative properties. It is an antibacterial and antifungal preservative that prevents the growth of bacteria or fungi in products, which allows these cosmetics and medicines to be stored for longer without the risk of deterioration.
Quaternium-15 is mainly used in products such as shampoos, shower gels, bath foams, body lotions or creams. In addition, the substance is also found in some types of make-up, deodorants and shaving products. It is also used in some medicines and eye drops. Despite its practical uses, however, Quaternium-15 has a downside. It is known to cause allergic reactions and can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. In addition, Quaternium-15, like many other formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, has been classified as a possible human cancer-causing substance by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer). However, its use in cosmetic products is still allowed in regulated quantities.
