Pycnanthus angolensis, better known by the names Kombo, African nutmeg or African nutmeg, is a tall evergreen tree native to tropical Africa. This species has a wide range of uses as it is valued for its wood as well as its edible fruit and seeds. The twigs of the tree have a characteristic scent reminiscent of nutmeg.
The uses of this tree are very diverse. The wood is hard and durable, so it is well suited for furniture and other heavy structures. In countries where the tree occurs naturally, the wood is also used to make traditional musical instruments. The seeds of the African geranium are a rich source of oil, which is used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. It has a high fatty acid content and is known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Kombo seed oil is therefore often used in skin care products, soaps and shampoos. It is even used in the food industry. The seeds are also eaten directly, and when toasted they have a roasted nutty aroma. The young leaves and bark of the tree are used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments.
