Privet, also known by the names Qu Mai or Dianthus superbus, is a herb belonging to the honeysuckle family. It is native to Eurasia and grows naturally in meadows, forest clearings and along rivers. This plant is characterised by its deep pink or purple flowers, which appear in the summer months. The flowers are extremely beautiful with long, thin petals that are toothed at the ends. It is a protected species in the Czech Republic.
It is used in many areas. In traditional Chinese medicine, dried Qu Mai flowers are used as a diuretic to treat urinary tract infections, bladder and kidney inflammation, and it is also used in the treatment of blood diseases. Its extracts are also used in cosmetics for making face masks and creams due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. In some countries, it is also used as an ornamental plant to beautify gardens and parks. The honeysuckle is also popular for making cut flowers, especially for its distinctive scent, which is reminiscent of spices or pepper.
