Propyl paraben

Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)

Propylparaben, also known as aluminium chloride or aluminium chloride, is a common ingredient in cosmetics and food products. It is a preservative that extends the shelf life of products and prevents the growth of bacteria and mould. It is added to a range of products, including body and skin creams, shampoos, deodorants, lipsticks, make-up, as well as foods such as drinks, sauces, ice cream and confectionery.

But propylparaben also brings with it some controversial topics. Some studies suggest that it could affect the endocrine system and act as an endocrine disruptor. These are substances that can affect the body's hormones and contribute to the development of various health problems, including cancer. Because of these suspicions, some products containing propylparaben are banned in some countries, such as Denmark. However, both the European Food Safety Authority and the US Food and Drug Administration consider propylparaben to be safe in the amounts commonly found in cosmetics and food.
