Premna Herbacea, also known by many other names - such as Andropogon muricatus, Chrysopogon zizanioides, Anatherum zizaniodes, Ushira, Khas-Khas, Khus-Khus, "Oil of tranquility", potassium beard, Chrysopogon zizanioides or vetivere - is an aromatic herb native to India. It is known for its decorative properties, but also for its specific scent and medicinal properties. Thanks to its strong roots, which penetrate up to 3 metres underground, it is resistant to drought and is therefore widely used against soil erosion.
The plant is used in many industries, especially in the cosmetic and perfumery industry, medicine and food processing. The scent of premna herbacea is very specific, characteristically sweet, with a hint of wood and earth. The roots are used to produce an oil which is used in many perfumes, soaps, creams and other cosmetic products. Due to its cooling effect, it is used for aromatherapy and is also used to produce the 'Oil of tranquility'. In medicine it is used for its antiseptic, diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. In the food industry, its oil is used as a natural food flavouring.
