Potassium Lauryl Sulfate
Other names: Potassium dodecyl sulphate
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Potassium Lauryl Sulfate, or also Potassium dodecyl sulfate, is a chemical that is commonly used in many cosmetic and personal care products due to its cleansing and foaming properties. It belongs to the group of surfactants, i.e. surfactants that reduce the surface tension between two substances such as water and oil. Lauryl sulfonic acid, from which this sulphate is made, is known for its ability to mix well with water and fats, which is a prerequisite for effective cleaning products.
Potassium Lauryl Sulfate is found in a wide range of consumer products. This is most commonly found in shampoos, shower gels, soaps, toothpastes, but also in some household products such as detergents and washing powders. Its role in these products is to assist in the removal of dirt and grease from the surface of the skin, hair and teeth, providing a deep clean. In addition, this substance also helps to create a rich lather, which many people consider to be a sign of the effectiveness of a cleaning product. Although this substance is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products, some studies suggest that it may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
