Polyglyceryl-3 Caprylate
Other names: Triglyceryl monocaprylate
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Polyglyceryl-3 Caprylate, also known as Triglyceryl monocaprylate, is a cosmetic ingredient that is primarily used in the cosmetic industry. It is a fatty substance, emulsifier and moisturizing ingredient that helps to alter the surface of the skin and hair, making them feel soft and smooth. Polyglyceryl-3 Caprylate also reduces the surface tension between two substances, such as water and oil, allowing them to mix. This substance is made from glycerol and caprylic acid and is an ester with three molecules of glycerol and one molecule of caprylic acid.
Due to its properties, Polyglyceryl-3 Caprylate is used in a wide range of cosmetic products. Some of the most common include skin and body creams, sunscreens, makeup, shampoos and conditioners, shaving products, deodorants, and more. This emulsifier is also used in products for sensitive skin or for children, as it is considered gentle and non-aggressive. Although it is considered safe, cases of skin irritation have been reported in a few individuals. It is also important to note that although it is an ingredient made from natural ingredients, it is not necessarily suitable for vegans as glycerol can be of plant or animal origin.
