Plum twig (Evernia prunastri)
Other names: oak moss, oakmoss
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Plum twig moss, also known as oakmoss or oakmoss, is a species of lichen that grows mainly on the bark of deciduous trees in the cooler regions of the northern hemisphere. It is characterised by its dark green or yellow-green moss-like branches. Among other things, it can also be found on oak, from which one of its names comes. Because of its appearance and its ability to grow on virtually any substrate, this species of lichen is a favourite among bonsai enthusiasts.
One of the most famous applications of the plum twig is in the production of perfumes. It is used in these because of its distinctive soft and sweet scent, which is often described as woody or earthy and reminiscent of nutmeg, vanilla and jasmine. Perfumes that contain plum twig are often highly sought after, especially for their long-lasting scent. Plum twig is also often used in home soapmaking, as its composition allows for the creation of a hard, high quality soap. In addition, research has shown that this species of lichen contains compounds that may have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It is therefore promising that it may be used in the pharmaceutical industry in the future.
