The plum tree, more commonly known as the plum or domestic plum, is one of the most popular fruit trees in our gardens. It is a species of the broad rose family, whose scientific name is Prunus domestica. It is native to Europe and western Asia and thrives very well in our latitudes. The plum is very popular in our area not only for its versatile flavour but also for the abundant harvest it produces each year. Its fruits, which appear in late summer/early autumn, are very tasty and juicy and are therefore ideal for eating straight from the tree.
Plums can be used in a wide range of products. Of course, they are great to eat, but they make a significant contribution to many traditional and modern foods. One of the best known and most popular products is certainly plum brandy and various types of plum liqueurs, which are famous not only in the Czech Republic but also throughout the world. Plums are also used to make various types of jams, compotes and puddings. When it comes to sweet pastries, plum cake is one of the absolute classics. Thanks to their specific taste, plums are also suitable as a component of various sauces and marinades in the preparation of meat. Last but not least, plums can also serve as a dried fruit, which is ideal for eating out of season.
