Piper Kadsura, also known as Kandsura pepper, Piper futokadsura, Piper arboricola, Hai Feng Teng or Kadsura pepper, is a plant of the pepper family endemic to southern China, Vietnam and Laos. It is marked as a low-risk species, but its population has recently declined due to the disappearance of its natural habitat. This climbing liana, which can grow up to 10 metres long, has pinnate leaves and small flowers that produce long racemes. The fruit of the Kandsur pepper tree is a round, green to yellow-green berry about 1 cm in diameter and containing a single seed.
Over the ages, Piper Kadsura has become a popular ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. There are many records of its effects on the musculoskeletal system, eyes and blood. Its bark and roots are traditionally used to treat rheumatism and muscle and joint pain. The leaves are used to treat eye problems and to promote visual function. Piper Kadsura is also known for its medicinal properties in the cardiovascular system, helping to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Due to its valuable flavonoid and terpenoid content, it is used in some cosmetic products. In addition to these medicinal and cosmetic applications, Piper Kadsura is also used as a spice in some regional Chinese cuisines.
