Physalis angulata

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

The small-fruited moss, also known as frankincense, Sudanese frankincense or Itan Zaf, is an annual herb belonging to the aubergine family. It is native to Central and South America, but is now found almost all over the world. It grows in areas with tropical to subtropical climates and also thrives in humid regions. Its fruits are found in leafy, papery cases that are green to light brown in colour.

One of the important characteristics of the small-fruited moth is its wide use in the production of various products. Its fruit, which is sweet and pleasantly aromatic, is eaten fresh or used to make various jams, marmalades, compotes and other sweet dishes. Due to its high vitamin content, it is also used medicinally, for example for health problems such as inflammation, rheumatism, asthma, constipation and others. The leaves of the plant are often used to make teas that are beneficial for digestion. In addition, colour pigments used in the textile industry are also obtained from the small-fruited plant. Yet, despite its widespread uses and benefits, the small-fruited monkfish is considered an invasive plant species in some areas.
