Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The shrub peony, also known by other names such as Peony Tree or Mu Dan Pi, is a beautiful plant that belongs to the peony family (Paeoniaceae). Native to Asia, this shrub is particularly well known for its large, distinctive and highly aromatic flowers. The flowers of the cultivated variety can vary greatly from simple five-petalled to full-flowered forms with more than 50 petals and can come in a wide range of colours - white, pink, red or yellow. It flowers between May and June and can reach a height of around 2 metres.
But it's not just a beautiful ornamental plant, the bush peony is also used in traditional Chinese medicine, specifically its bark, to treat a range of health problems including bleeding, menstrual difficulties and liver disease. The flowers of the cultivated varieties are used to make perfumes and cosmetic products such as various creams, shower gels, shampoos and home fragrances. Its flowers can also be used as a garnish for salads and other dishes. Due to its intense scent and striking flowers, the bush peony is also a favourite plant among beekeepers. Although it is more difficult to care for and requires plenty of light and well-drained soil, its beautiful flowers and versatile uses clearly demonstrate that it is worth a little effort to grow it in the garden.
