Paulinia beverage (Guarana)

Other names: Paullinia cupana

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

The Paulinia beverage plant, also known as Guarana or Paullinia cupana, is a plant native to the Amazon that is mainly grown in Brazil. It is a climbing woody plant with oval leaves and small red-yellow flowers. Its fruits contain seeds which, unlike coffee beans, have a very high caffeine content, more than double that of coffee beans. These tiny seeds are the basic raw material for the production of guarana.

Guarana is mainly used in the food industry. Today it is mainly found in energy drinks, where it replaces the coffee component and adds extra energy thanks to its high caffeine content. In addition, it is also a component of some types of tea, either alone or in combination with other herbs. But very often guarana is also used as an ingredient in various food supplements, such as fitness bars or protein mixes, where it helps to improve physical and mental performance. In the cosmetics industry, the seeds of paullinia are used for their moisturising and blood-purifying properties, for example in skin creams or shampoos.
