Patrinia sibirica, also known as Valeriana sibirica, Valeriana ruthenica, Fedia sibirica, or Altai valerian, is a perennial herb native to East Asia. It grows in sandy and gravelly areas, but can also be found in damp places along rivers and lakes. This plant is highly valued for its medicinal properties. Its yellow flowers are in the form of a chrysalis and bloom from June to August. The branches are upright and up to 100 cm high. The leaves are alternate, lance-shaped, with a heart-shaped base. Patrinia sibirica is also recorded in the Czech Republic under the name Siberian braid.
Many medieval herbalists and physicians used Altai valerian for its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects. In Eastern medicine, this plant is used to treat various infections and to heal wounds. Modern research has confirmed that the plant does indeed contain substances that have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Altaic valerian is thus used in many products. In cosmetics, for example, it is used to make creams and ointments to treat various skin problems such as acne, eczema or psoriasis. It is also used in alternative medicine. It is used to make tinctures, teas or powders to support the immune system, relieve pain or treat respiratory diseases. It is also used in aromatherapy for its calming and relaxing effects.
