Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
p-Methylaminophenol sulfate, mainly known by the trivial names Metol, Elon or also 4-(methylamino)phenolsulfate, is an organic compound used mainly in the field of photography. This white crystalline substance is characterized by good solubility in alcohol or water and is easily oxidized. The properties of these substances allow their use in development baths for black and white photography.
Specifically, Metol acts as a reducing agent that converts a batch of exposed photographic emulsion into a visible image. In addition, this substance is also a common ingredient in hair care products. Here it acts as an antioxidant agent that protects the hair from damage. However, it must be added that Methol is also potentially dangerous to humans. Allergic reactions of the skin and mucous membranes are possible, and skin irritation can occur with prolonged exposure. In case of eye contact, even serious eye damage can occur. Nevertheless, this substance is still widely used because, if handled correctly and precautions are taken, the risk is minimal.
