Oxybenzone
Other names: Benzophenone-3, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone
Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
Oxybenzone, also called Benzophenone-3 or 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, is an organic compound widely used in the cosmetic industry. Its main use is as an ingredient in sunscreens, as it is able to absorb surface ultraviolet radiation and thus protect the skin from UV radiation. The presence of this substance in sunscreen products is so common that it is estimated to be found in over 96% of all sunscreens. It is also frequently found in moisturizers, make-up and other cosmetic products.
In addition to cosmetic products, oxybenzone is also used in some plastic materials, often as an ingredient used for UV protection. For example, it is added to packaging to make it resistant to sunlight to prevent premature ageing and decomposition. Although oxybenzone is generally considered safe for human use, there are ongoing debates about its potential impact on coral reefs. Several studies have suggested that the compound may be harmful to the marine ecosystem, leading some countries, such as Hawaii, to consider regulating its use.
