Oregano (Origanum vulgare)

Other names: Common St. John's wort

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Oregano, also known as common oregano, is a perennial herb with flowers in shades of pink and purple, which belongs to the deaf-leaved family. This ancient plant is native to the Mediterranean, where it grows wild in the foothills and is considered an essential part of the local diet. Its distinctive aroma and flavour make it a popular spice and, in addition to its culinary uses, it has a wide range of medicinal properties. It is particularly well known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

A compound called carvacrol, which oregano contains, is a very effective defence against bacteria and also supports the health of the digestive tract. It is used not only in cooking but also for the production of cosmetic products and medicines. In cooking, oregano is most commonly used in Italian and Greek cuisine, especially in pizza, pasta or sauces. However, it is advisable to add it to dishes after cooking, as it loses its aroma through long cooking. In cosmetics, oregano is used for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, for example in shower gels, shampoos and skin creams. In medicine, oregano is used to produce an essential oil that has a wide range of uses, from treating colds and headaches to anti-inflammatory therapy.
