Other names: Dimethylsulfone, (methanesulfonyl)methane
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
MSM, also known by the names Dimethylsulfone or (methansulfonyl)methane, is a sulphur-containing organic substance. This biologically active substance is found in large quantities in nature, in fresh plants, fruits and vegetables, but also in milk, eggs and meat. MSM is its synthetic form, which is used in medical and cosmetic products.
MSM is primarily known for its anti-inflammatory effects and is therefore used in a number of dietary supplements designed to combat joint problems and inflammation. It is very popular in musculoskeletal support product lines, where it is often combined with chondroitin and glucosamine. A positive effect is also achieved when taking MSM in powder or tablet form. The sulphur contained in MSM also promotes the synthesis of collagen and keratin, two essential building blocks of skin, hair and nails. Hence its use in cosmetic products such as shampoos, balms, creams or masks designed to regenerate and strengthen skin, hair and nails. It is also included in sports supplements used to regenerate muscles after physical activity.
