Montpellier cist (Cistus Monspeliensis)
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The montpellier cist, also known as the ladano cist, ladano, labdanum, or rock rose, is an evergreen shrub growing in the Mediterranean region. Its height is usually between 30 and 100 cm, and it is characterised by long narrow leaves and white or pink flowers with five petals. It is known for its pleasant, balsamic-sweet scent, which is particularly strong during hot summer days. This shrub is very hardy, best suited to drier conditions, and adapts well to poor, rocky soils. In spring, the Montpellier cistus is adorned with showy flowers that have earned it the nickname 'rock rose'.
Extracts of the Montpellier cistus can be found in many cosmetic and perfume products. Its aroma is deep, warm and balmy and is therefore widely used in perfume and aromatherapy. Specifically, it is a resin called labdanum that is harvested from the bush and used in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as in the production of certain types of soaps, creams and other cosmetic products. Labdanum also has medicinal properties - it is used to treat colds, bronchial ailments, and to soothe and relax muscles. A number of studies have also confirmed its antibacterial properties. In addition, it is also used to make an essential oil that is popular for its relaxing effects and its ability to relieve anxiety and stress.
