Melaleuca ericifolia
Other names: Rosalina, Swamp paperback, Heath Maleluca
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Melaleuca ericifolia, also known as Rosalina, Swamp paperbark or Heath Maleluca, is a species of evergreen shrub or tree in the genus Melaleuca. Its native habitat is the saltmarsh and ruderal areas of Australia, particularly in the New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania region. As is the case with other species in this genus, it also has characteristic papery layers peeling from the trunk. It gets its name ericifolia from the shape of its leaves, which resemble heath plants.
At first sight, however, this unremarkable plant is becoming very important in the production of essential oils. This is due to its high linalool content, which, when mixed with the essential oil, is beneficial for sensitive and irritated skin, making dewberry oil a popular ingredient in cosmetic products. Linalool is also known for its relaxing effects, which is why the oil is used in candles, diffusers and other aromatherapy products. Melaleuca ericifolia is also used in the medical sector: research shows that the oil from this plant has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties.
