Mayten macrocarpa, scientifically Maytenus macrocarpa, is an evergreen tree native to Colombia and Peru, where it is found in the local tropical vegetation. This tree is very popular in South America and is used for its medicinal properties. In different regions, this tree is also known by different local names which may be Chuchuhuasi, Chucchi huashu, Chuchuhuasha, Chuchuasha, Chocha Huasha, Chuchuwasha. Other scientific names that refer to this tree include Maytenus krukovii, M. ebenifolia, M. laevis.
The Mayten is known for its medicinal properties, which are used in traditional South American medicine, where it is widely used especially to treat rheumatic pains, to reduce inflammation, but also to treat stomach disorders. In addition to medicine, the Mayten, or rather its bark, is used in the production of the alcoholic drink chuchuhuasi, which is popular in Peru and other South American countries. It is also used in the production of medicinal teas and extracts. The bark of chuchuhuasi is also commonly used in the production of various ointments and creams to soothe the skin, relieve pain and speed up wound healing.
