Marsh cricket (Oxycoccus palustris)

Other names: Arctic cranberry, Siberian cranberry

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Oxycoccus palustris, also known as Arctic or Siberian cranberry, is a plant belonging to the cranberry family. It is native to cold regions of the northern hemisphere, especially North America, Europe and Asia. At first glance, it can be confused with the large-fruited cranberry, the true cranberry or the American cranberry for its appearance and taste, but it differs from them mainly because of its location and the very specific conditions it requires for its growth. These conditions include, in particular, the moist, acidic and cool environment that is typical of peat bogs and fens.

The fruits of the mud cranesbill, which ripen in autumn, are small, round and have an intense red colour. They are mainly used to make juices, jams, jellies, compotes, wine or as a baking ingredient. It is also a common ingredient in traditional Christmas dishes, where it is served as an accompaniment to meat. Cranberry juice is particularly popular in North America, where it is consumed to prevent urinary infections. In addition, it is also used in cosmetics for its antioxidant properties. The harvesting of the mud crank is difficult and is often done by hand due to the sensitivity of the plant. However, its fruits are highly prized for their unique characteristic sweet and sour flavor profile and richness in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C and K.
