Mangosteen delicious (Garcinia mangostana)

Other names: mangosteen, garcinia, fruit of the gods

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Mangosteen, better known in the Czech Republic as mangosteen, is an exotic tree native to East Asia, now cultivated in many tropical regions of the world. Its fruit - the mangosteen fruit in the form of small dark purple balls - is still hardly available in the Czech Republic, but in Asia it is very popular and appreciated for its tastiness and health benefits. For this reason, they are also sometimes referred to as the 'fruit of the gods'. The fruit itself opens like a flower when the top is cut off and inside we find white segments with a fibrous centre and a little juice, which are edible and taste sweet and spicy.

Mangosteen is mainly used in the food industry as a fresh fruit, but it is also made into juices, jams or even liqueurs. Thanks to its nutritional values and exceptional fragrance, it is also popular in cosmetics. Its extract is added to creams, oils, soaps and other cosmetic products. The main advantage of mangosteen, however, is its medicinal properties. Its juice is used in folk medicine to treat various ailments such as eczema, ulcers or fever. Due to its high antioxidant content, it is also often used in dietetics to improve the body's defences.
