Magnesium Hydroxide
Other names: Magnesium hydroxide, E528
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Magnesium hydroxide, also known as magnesium hydroxide or E528, is an inorganic compound that has many uses. It exists in the form of a white crystalline powder that dissolves very poorly in water. Magnesium Hydroxide is a basic compound that is formed by the reaction of sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride.
Magnesium hydroxide is used in many industries. Its main use is in the food industry, where it is included in many products as additive E528. Its role is to regulate acidity, which increases the stability of food. It is thus often a component of confectionery, bakery products, dairy products, jams and jellies and some types of chocolate. In medicine, magnesium hydroxide is used as an antacid, i.e. a medicine to neutralise stomach acids, for example in cases of heartburn. It is also used in the manufacture of fire extinguishers, where it acts as an acid neutraliser.
