Levulinic acid, also known as levulinic acid or acidum levulinicum, is an organic substance belonging to the group of carboxylic acids. Its molecule consists of six carbon atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms and a pair of oxygen atoms. This acid was first isolated in the 19th century by the Italian scientist Guglielmo Hugo Ventura from many types of plants, including corn and plums.
Today, levulinic acid is used in many industrial applications. It is an important raw material in the cosmetics industry, where it serves as a preservative and quality stabilizer for cosmetic products. It is therefore an indispensable ingredient in body creams, bath mousses or decorative cosmetics. Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it prevents the growth of bacteria, moulds and yeasts in cosmetic products. In the food industry it is used as a flavouring or preservative. In the pharmaceutical industry, levulinic acid is used to produce some medicines. Levulinic acid is also one of the building blocks for the production of plastics prepared from renewable resources in the bioplastics industry. For example, the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from levulinic acid is proposed as a sustainable alternative to the conventional PVC production process. In recent years, it has also found applications as a precursor for bioethanol production.
