Laureth-4
Other names: PEG-4-Lauryl Ether
Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
Laureth-4, also known as PEG-4-Lauryl Ether, is a synthetic ingredient commonly used in cosmetic and chemical products. This ingredient belongs to the group of polyethoxylated alcohols, which are prepared by reacting lauryl alcohol with ethylene oxide. Laureth-4 is a good solvent and is therefore often included in some industrial cleaning products, but is also widely used in personal skin and hair care products. It produces a low foam and has moisturizing ability.
Laureth-4 is commonly used in cosmetics as an emulsifier or surfactant in many products such as shampoos, shower gels, bath foams, creams and lotions. Its ability to slightly moisturise and form a fine foam makes it an important ingredient in these products. It is also very often used in make-up removing products as it can dissolve even very stubborn types of make-up. In the chemical industry, Laureth-4 is used as an emulsifier for industrial cleaners and also in car care products such as various waxes and polishes.
