Laureth-23

Other names: PEG-23 Lauryl Ether, Polyoxyethylene (23) lauryl ether

Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)

Laureth-23, also known as PEG-23 Lauryl Ether or Polyoxyethylene (23) Lauryl Ether, is a synthetic substance used in cosmetics and body care. It is a weak cleansing and emulsifying ingredient that allows water and oil to be mixed into a homogeneous and stable mixture. Laureth-23 is therefore used in a wide range of products, from shampoos and conditioners to skin creams and soaps, to shaving products and make-up removers.

An easy way to think of the function of Laureth-23 is as little helpers that hold oil and water together. Solvents such as PEGs and related substances create a bridge between water and oil ingredients in products. So thanks to Laureth-23 we can have, for example, creams that spread easily and do not separate. Without Laureth-23, the ingredients in cosmetic products would separate - the oil would lie on top and the water would remain at the bottom. Additionally, it should be noted that Laureth-23 is generally considered safe in the concentrations used in cosmetic products. However, if you are a person with sensitive skin, you may possibly develop an allergic reaction or irritation after using products containing Laureth-23.
