Juniperus osteosperma, also known as Sabina osteosperma, Juniperus utahensis or Juniperus californica, is an evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the cypress family. It is endemic to southwestern North America, especially to arid regions of states such as Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California and New Mexico. This species of juniper is characterized by slow growth and resistance to harsh conditions such as drought or poor soil. Its fruits are blue berries with a bitter taste, but they are not edible for humans.
As for the uses of juniper osteospermum, there are many. The main industrial use is the production of essential oils, which make use of its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Juniper essential oil is used in the cosmetic industry in a range of skin and hair care products. The wood of the juniper osteospermum is also used as fuel, especially in areas of its natural range. The fruit is used medicinally, especially in traditional Indian medicine, where it has been used as a remedy for stomach disorders and respiratory infections. Due to their strong aroma and bitter taste, juniper berries are also used to flavour food and alcohol, such as gin.
