The Japanese loquat (Eriobotrya japonica), also known as loquat, Japanese mouse tree, Japanese mouse tree, Chinese plum or Japanese plum, is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. It grows up to 10 metres in height. It has overhanging branches with glossy, oval leaves. Its fruits are pale orange, sweet and sour in taste and about two to three centimetres in diameter. Indoors, Japanese lovage is grown as an ornamental houseplant, while in warmer climates (such as the Mediterranean) it is grown outdoors.
The main product of the Japanese lovage is its fruit, which is eaten fresh but is also used to prepare various food products. They taste similar to apricots and are very popular in the culinary culture of many countries. They are made into jams, marmalades, juices, wine and liqueurs. In addition, the Japanese loquat also produces an essential oil that is used in cosmetics and aromatherapy. Loquat leaves contain many antioxidants and are therefore also used to make teas and other medicinal products. In traditional Chinese medicine, Japanese elder is used in the treatment of various diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis or inflammation of the respiratory tract.
