Ivy (Hedera helix)

Other names: St. John´s Belt

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Climbing ivy, scientifically Hedera helix and often referred to as St. John's Belt, is a species of plant belonging to the Araliaceae family. It is native to Europe and western Asia and is characterised by its ability to climb trees, walls and other surfaces where it can hold on firmly by means of root suckers growing from the trunk. This feature is used by gardeners and landscapers to create green facades and hedges. However, climbing ivy also has its negatives - it can damage the trees it grows on and is not suitable for homes with small children and animals as it is poisonous.

Not overlooked, however, are the benefits that climbing ivy offers in medicine and cosmetics. Its leaves and young shoots are mainly used in homeopathy, e.g. for the treatment of chronic bronchial diseases and conjunctivitis. Known products also include syrups, teas and ointments made from ivy leaves. The saponins and flavonoids present are effective against coughs, inflammation, improve blood circulation and are anti-inflammatory. In cosmetics, ivy is used in skin and body creams, shampoos and other preparations. It is beneficial to the skin, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and helps in the treatment of skin imperfections. Nevertheless, products with ivy should be used with caution as they can cause an allergic reaction.
