Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Isopropyl Myristate, also known as IPM 90, propan-2-yl tetradecanoate, myristic acid isopropyl ester or Tetradecanoic acid, 1-methylethyl ester, isopropyl ester, is an ester made from the reaction of isopropyl alcohol and myristic acid. It is derived from coconut oil and is considered non-toxic. It is highly regarded for its unique effects on the skin and is often used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Its main advantage is its ability to increase the permeability of the skin to medicinal substances, thus allowing their deeper penetration.
The main products in which isopropyl myristate is significantly used include cosmetics. It is a component of various creams, lotions, make-up products and sunscreens. Due to its ability to increase skin permeability, it is often used in transdermal therapeutic systems, such as drug patches, by which drugs are applied directly to the skin and gradually released into the blood. It also has the added benefit of reducing the greasy feeling on the skin caused by oils and waxes in products. Isopropyl myristate is also used in food production, such as in the manufacture of baked goods, to extend their shelf life and improve texture.
